Between 2005 and 2006, total volumes of municipal waste increased by only 1.2%, compared to 8.6% for e-waste.The average lifespan of computers has dropped from six years to merely two years in less than a decade. Electronic waste now makes up five percent of all household waste worldwide, nearly the same amount as all plastic packaging. The EPA says that e-waste is responsible for at least 40 percent of the toxic, heavy metals like mercury, lead and cadmium in U.S. landfills.E-waste primarily contains toxic metals, including mercury, cadmium and lead that can leach into surrounding soil, ground water or vaporize into the air. Studies show the incidence of autism is one and a half times higher in areas near toxic chemicals such as mercury, cadmium and lead – the toxins most prevalent in e-waste. Childhood leukemia and other health related diseases have also been linked to overexposure to the toxins prevalent in e-waste. The U.S. National Safety Council estimates that 75% of all personal computers ever sold are now gathering dust as surplus electronics.
